Located in the Polatlı district of Ankara, Gordion Ancient City has been registered as our 20th asset on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The decision was made at the 45th UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting held in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. Gordion will now be preserved as a world heritage.

Gordion is the historical capital of the Phrygian Civilization. Situated above the confluence of the Sakarya River and Porsuk Stream, the city is located 94 kilometers from Ankara today, in Yassıhöyük, 29 kilometers northwest of Polatlı. According to archaeological findings, the Phrygians came to Gordion following the collapse of the Hittites, as early as the late 12th century BC. Excavations have revealed the earliest Phrygian settlements consisting of small houses with light construction, typical of a village, containing everyday life materials. In the 9th century BC, a major transformation occurred, and the settlement became a fortified city with massive walls and large buildings.

There are numerous tumuli around Gordion. These hills are graves of significant individuals, dating from the 9th century BC to the 2nd century AD. Established in a village of about 250 people in 1963, the Gordion Museum is one of Turkey’s significant museums with its added storage, laboratory, image and information hall, open and closed display, and explanatory information.

The museum, which presents a chronological display of artifacts collected mainly from the excavations at Gordion and around the Polatlı district, was a finalist in the European Museum of the Year Contest in 2000. The museum exhibits include pottery from the Early Bronze Age to the Middle and Late Bronze Ages, early Phrygian pottery, relief orthostats from the Early Iron Age, and iron tools from the Early Phrygian Period. The Gordion Ancient Site in the Yassıhöyük Village of Polatlı district was first settled around the end of 3000 BC. Various layers of settlement belonging to the Hittites, Phrygians, Persians, and Romans have been found in the ancient city. The largest of the tumulus graves in ancient Gordion, believed to belong to King Midas, is the Midas Tumulus, with a diameter of 300 meters and a height of 55 meters, making it the second-largest tumulus in Anatolia.
